ATLANTIC
Built from the molds of the Fast Passage 39, This Fast Passage 40 is a modernized, reimagined version. Northern Marine of Anacortes, Washington was selected as the builder due to their vast experience building expedition yachts. ATLANTIC resembles the 39 in appearance only as her construction utilizes modern techniques and building materials. The vacuum bagged hull was constructed using vinylester resin for strength and rigidity and the bow was reinforced with kevlar. Airex foam is used above the waterline and in deck core, eliminating the problematic balsa wood. The resulting hull was lighter than the original, so additional lead was added to the keel and a taller more powerful double spreader rig was it added. ATLANTIC truly is a modern-built classic.
With a cutter rig, electric winches and a well-balanced sail plan, this Fast Passage is an ideal choice for short-handed ocean cruising. ATLANTIC has crossed her namesake ocean twice with her current owner and has cruised extensively from Maine to Trinidad. It is a testament to her sailing ability to have so little engine run time - given the thousands of miles that passed under her keel.
A figured cherry and ash interior (voted best interior when debuted at the Annapolis Boat Show) and a traditional, yet elegant layout make ATLANTIC a pleasure to spend time aboard. Her interior features a centerline table, a large galley, and a forward-facing nav station - a detail that will pull at the heartstrings of any navigator who has ever been to sea in a gale. She was introduced to the public at the Annapolis Boat show in 2000 with rave reviews. Cruising World, April 2001, Chesapeake Bay Magazine, Jan 2001, Blue Water Sailing, October 2001 and a host of others all raved about the boat.
If you are reading this then you most likely have a sense of the reputation of the Fast Passage 39. The design was made famous in the 1983 BOC Challenge with Francis Stokes aboard "Moonshine," a proven ocean-going yacht. Designed by William Garden with a total of 40 built.
With only 40 Fast Passage 39's produced and only one Fast Passage 40, the Fast Passages are rare, to say the least. Owners tend to keep them for their sailing careers. If you are looking for an extremely capable boat that sails well and looks great then you owe it to yourself to take a tour of ATLANTIC. Highly Recommended.
Construction Scantlings:
Single skin gel coat over multiple layers of vinylester resin-impregnated fiberglass. Kevlar reinforcement in the bow. Foam core above the LWL.
Integral FRP floors stringers. FRP tabbed structural bulkheads. Airex foam core in decks solid FRP in high load areas.
Superstructure/Layout:
Atlantic has a figured cherry and ash interior that is warm and inviting. Upon descending the companionway, a forward-facing navigation station with a pilot berth is to starboard and a large aft cabin with locker and drawers is to port. A U-shaped galled is to port with a large head with a shower opposite. The engine is located on the centerline and there is superb access thanks to a multitude of hinged doors and removable panels. Ahead of the galley, an L-shaped settee is to port with a straight settee to starboard. A Cherry table is on the centerline with large folding leaves. The forward cabin has a V berth with filler and hanging lockers port and starboard.
ATLANTICS Navigation station is forward-facing which many say prevents sea sickness while at sea. Its location at the head of the pilot berth makes communication with the helmsperson simple and efficient.
ATLANTIC is set up for short or single-handed sailing with electric winches and all lines leading aft to the safety of the cockpit.
