“SEA DAWG II” is being sold “AS IS, WHERE IS” and the price reflects that there are no sails to be found and no inside cushions. HOWEVER, there is the Cape Dory Intrepid 28 pedigree, the continuing loyalty of current owners and the reputation and immense desire within the sailing community, to find one of these perfectly lovely racing/cruising family yachts......HERE’S YOUR CHANCE!!!
The Intrepid 28 is a more contemporary design than one would expect from Cape Dory Yachts but the high quality of workmanship that discriminating buyers have come to appreciate from this superior builder shows throughout. Below decks there is a traditional layout; spacious V-berth; private head; main salon with settees port and starboard and a fold-down table; L-shaped galley; nav table; and starboard quarter berth
Launched in 1979 the Rolf van der Sleen designed Cape Dory Intrepid 28’ still stands out among the club members and coastal cruisers as a sturdy, traditionally styled, compact cruising sloop ideal for family coastal cruising yet capable of offshore sailing. “SEA DAWG II” features an attractive sheer, a fin keel and skeg hung rudder below the water line.
Among Van der Sleen’s other designs, are the Grampian 28’, The Great Lakes CatBoat, and the CS 27.
When naval architect Rolf van der Sleen and Cape Dory Yachts got together, they created a boat that people who love sailing would love to sail. So when they got together to design and built the CAPE DORY INTREPID 28, no one was surprised that they came up with a cruising auxiliary sailboat that is full sailing pleasure, because we built her that way from the beginning!!!
They started out with the idea that a 28’ cruising auxiliary yacht should be as still, stable and seaworthy as possible. Also, that she should be beautifully balanced as well as surprisingly fast & especially agile in light air. So they designed a fin keel with a skeg hung rudder.
The design concept was to create a boat that could comfortably be sailed singlehanded or with a mini-crew of 2. The interior was created to provide a private forward cabin with 2 settee berths, a quarter berth and ample storage, an enclosed head, sink & hanging locker. There is a bulkhead mounted fold up table to open up the interior and a good and user friendly galley and chart table.
The galley offers convenient service to the cockpit and is located directly under the large companionway. There is plenty of light, a stainless steel sink with foot pump fresh water, insulated ice box, and convenient storage.
On deck includes main & jib working sails, halyard & sheet winches, jiffy reefing, bow and stern s.s. pulpit, teak cabin top hand rails and double lifelines. The Cape Dory Intrepid 28 “SEA DAWG II” is a rugged and roomy mini cruiser and most importantly, very attractively priced.
We think the Cape Dory CD28 SEA DAWG II is exactly what her designer and builder envisioned. The best boat possible for her size, and one of the nicest cruising auxiliary sailboats in the water….a boat that people who love sailing would love to sail.
If your requirements add up to a sound cruising boat with classic lines and a boat that draws attention underway…look no further, “SEA DAWG III” is ready to take you cruising with the addition of sails and cushions!!!
The Cape Dory Intrepid 28 is a rugged little cruiser often quoted as having a feel of a larger boat. She combines traditional looks, quality construction and well-mannered sailing characteristics into a package that is offshore capable
Attractive and well-mannered, the Cape Dory Intrepid 28, “SEA DAWG II” offers the promise of a rewarding relationship.
The 3-step stainless tube and teak companionway ladder leads below to a cabin with 6’2 feet of head room.
“SEA DAWG” sleeps up to 5 people in accommodations with
the forward cabin, port and starboard settees and quarterberth. Teak joinery throughout.
As you enter the salon from the center entrance cockpit companionway, down a 3-step stainless tube and teak companionway ladder you will find to starboard, a galley and to port of the companionway, is the forward facing navigation station, the perfect location for contact and access to the cockpit and crew. Aft of the nav station, there is a good sized quarter berth. Good engine access behind the easily removed companionway ladder.
For a 28’ racer/pocket yacht, “SEADAWG II” features a rather spacious salon, with port and starboard full length settees, a starboard side fold up drop leaf bulkhead mounted teak table, leaving an unobstructed sole almost 4’ wide. The table leaf can open as a single table for portside dining guests, or can be opened up to a double table for guests both to port and starboard. Both port and starboard are long enough for a comfortable sea-berth and they have teak trimmed storage areas outboard and above.
Next forward to port and starboard (with privacy door to separate from V-Berth and/or Main saloon) is the head with toilet, S.S. sink, storage locker & foul weather hanging area outboard, opening port & teak fiddles on the countertop. There is a v- berth forward with storage over and open storage lockers beneath. There is an overhead hatch and 2 opening ports for excellent ventilation.
The L-shaped galley features a large ice box with shelf, opening for a drop in cooking unit, deep stainless steel sink and storage space above and below the counters.

On deck, the Intrepid 28 features a good looking cabin profile and good sized sloping side decks, which ensures water is not standing on the deck. The aft cockpit is protected by sizable coamings and a deep self-draining cockpit well and comes with tiller steering and a mainsheet traveler set at the forward end of the companionway hatch, just aft of a short bridge deck.
There are teak cabin top handrails, and bow and stern rails with double lifelines for secure deck work. The roomy cockpit features seating for a full crew if racing, with straight backrests, large seat lockers, port & starboard, winch handle pockets and recessed engine controls.
The deck arrangement is well balanced. The foredeck is large enough for sail handling and ground tackle and the side decks are wide enough for safe passage;
