"Manticore" is hull number 13 of 19 Custom Hood 40's made by Gulfstar between 1977 and 1978. She is a true blue water cruiser. Ted Hood often remarked that this was one of his favorite yachts he designed.
She has been actively cruised from the Chesapeake to Maine and consistently cared for with upgrades. In 2015 she was re-powered with a new Yanmar 4JH and has since also had brand new winches, canvas - including covers for her bright-work, two unique sets of electronics for offshore reliability, a rebuilt rudder, rebuilt centerboard casing and new centerboard cable, rebeded chain plates, new head and holding tank, new seacocks, and all new ports and hatches.
She has a custom-made Fairclough cover and frame, which is designed to accommodate the mast in or out for the winter. The vessel comes with an awning and her new dodger to attach to a future bimini.
This is the perfect yacht for anyone who wants a true classic design with the high function of a 3’11” shoal draft to explore any cove. Her center board gives her unmatched stability in any seas. The forward facing nav station and full radar visibility from the helm station is ideally situated for the thickest fog.
Manticore is a classic yacht that will take you and your family cruising in beautiful style.
Designed as a performance racer/cruiser, the layout is traditional and sleeps six in two cabins and has a roomy cockpit.
At the bow is a forepeak locker to accommodate two anchor rodes. Aft is the forward v-berth with insert stateroom with hanging locker, drawers and storage beneath the v-berth.
Moving aft is the head portside that is spacious and has a double entry; one to the forward stateroom and one to main cabin, and starboard are two lockers.
The main cabin features a large U-shaped dinette, pullout settee berth with a pilot berth above. There is plenty of storage with two lockers, a bookcase and underneath the dinette.
Opposite to port of the galley is the nav station with forward facing seat and foul weather locker. The nav station has chart storage and four drawers.
The engine is accessible by removing the companionway steps from either side via the cockpit lockers.
