The Passage 24, has accommodations of a much larger boat ... for a start, it has 6"-2" standing headroom throughout the main and into the forward cabin. It is a Tom Gillmer version of a Falmouth Cutter. It has both a Bow-sprit and a Boom-kin providing a 30' LOA sail plan. The 24 refers to the LOD measurement which is actually 24'-6'. It has very wide side decks and high gun'ls for a boat of this size. Spars and Rigging: White, powder-coated, 30' x 4 x 6 oval Swedish built, Selden' main-spar, H.D. alum. airfoil spreaders and boom. A s.s. Tabernacle permits manual raise or lowering of the mast. The H.D. s.s. rigging was manufactured and installed by the local and well-respected â€œSteve White Riggingâ€ shop in Vancouver, B.C. Running rigging: All oversize sheets for comfort of handling, Blocks and pulleys are all Lewmar products, as are the #16 double action, two speed, primary winches and handle. H.D. 1/4 inch thick externally mounted (for stability and safety), custom made 316 s.s. Chain Plates all round. The Bob-stay is a 1/2 inch s.s. rod, attached by clevis' ends and pins. The heavy fiberglass Hull and Deck assembly was built by Peter Randle (now of N.Z.) of Passage Boat Builders', Coquitlam, B.C. Sail Plan: Unlike the high aspect ratio sail plan suggested by Graham Shannon, N.A. of Vancouver, pictured on Google, this boat is Cutter rigged . . . which is what N.A. Tom Gillmer intended in his original plan for this traditional style vessel.
The Passage 24 is NOT a race boat, and the cutter Rig is more befitting of its traditional design. Furthermore, it is easier to handle especially if single handing. Sail inventory:Ivory colored Main, Stays'l and Forward Jib on the Alado Furler, plus a large Royal-blue light air Drifter. (Sails have 2 hours use) These 'Sobstad' sails were all new as of 2015 launch date, and were made by the top quality sail loft of Leitch and McBride, of N. Vancouver. The Mains'l is attached to the mast with conventional nylon slugs', while the Stays'l is conventional hank-on' and the forward jib is attached to the Alado airfoil for the roller furling. The additional lightweight Drifter can be hoisted on its own halyard or installed on the Furler if so desired. Other option is a Harken Lazy-Jack system to aid in lowering the mains'l and keeping it under control. The Passage 24 is a full keeled boat having an external hung, transom mounted rudder and Tiller Steering, and an encapsulated lead keel. Displacement: approx.. 8500 lbs. First launched August, 2015. This boat of traditional design and build is finished in oiled teak and yellow cedar interior, whilst the exterior has teak cap rails, teak hatches and interior cabinetry by owner; Full teak deck w/ nibbed in King plank in fore-deck, installed over the origl. f/g sub-deck . . . Installation was done by Anglo Marine of Shelter Island Marina, Richmond; The teak deck is bonded to the f/g, having no leak causing fasteners in the f/g sub deck. Cockpit: Deep f/g cockpit with removable w/tight hatch providing access to engine starter, Hurth transmission and drip-less shaft seal. Teak grid under foot, Teak covered, hinged lockable bench seats giving access to batteries and oodles of storage space under. Also, storage bins in high back port and starboard coamings. You sit inside this very safe and dry cockpit, not on it. We sailed in some pretty-rough water last year and never got one drop in the cockpit. Reason for this is the flared bow tends to throw waves away from the boat. Power: Fully insulated engine house contains a beautiful little BMW 12 h.p. single cyl diesel engine. Economy: It consumes approx 1/2 litre fuel per hour of operation. The engine is coupled thru an elect. bonded 1â€ s.s. shaft to a 13â€ Campbell-sailor, three bladed, bronze prop. It has accumulated approx. 15 hrs of operation in total. Thru-hulls: All bronze, electrically bonded throughout the boat. Head; Manual marine standard, Jabsco toilet with holding tank and Y-valve to meet current N. American marine regs. This system has never been used. Electrical: Batteries, 1 Deep cycle plus 1 standard start battery. Cabin and Running lights (some LED's) on a 12v fused system. 12v power outlet to charge I-phones or? etc. Shore Power: 110v shore power cable receptacles on both Port and Stb'd cockpit coamings. All fed thru Blue Seas double breaker elect panel w/selector switch. Four std. 110v outlets all GFI protected. Battery Charger: Mounted in engine room. Over-sized Nav Lights, Steaming Light/Deck Flood Light, and Anchor Light on mast-head. Bilge Pump(s): RULE 500 gph with float switch and Man/Auto control switch on breaker panel. Industry Standard (manually operated) Whale Gusher 10 bilge pump, located under stern seat and operated from cockpit. Forward cabin: 6' V-berth, w/sail storage under. Manual marine head, holding tank with macerator pump in port storage bin. Coal-scuttle type fold away vanity w/s.s. oval sink and faucet with electric push-button cold-water supply pump. Hanging locker on Starboard side. Access to chain locker thru front bulkhead. Main Cabin: 6'-6' Pilot Berths port and starboard, two bench type seats, Blue, custom made covers on foam squabs throughout. Storage bins under all seat and bunk decks, storage bins both sides of companionway, Teak and Holly sole throughout both cabins. Galley: Large S.S. sink, Dickinson single burner propane stove. Note: A propane sniffer is located under the heater, with alarm on the small bulkhead panel on port side settee. Lots of storage in cabinets and a 2 cubic foot, double insulated, removable Ice Box, accessible thru a flip-hatch located in the counter top, the latter doubles as a Chart Table w/Brass Chart Light above it. Dickinson propane heater, Neither of the propane appliances have been used. Aluminum propane tank mounts externally, and horizontal on the teak grid at the stern of the boat. Tankage: 3 - 25 litre alum. fresh water tanks under floor with both manual and elect. Water pumps. 2 -25 litre alum. fuel tanks. Safety: S.S. Pulpit and Push-pit with Vinyl covered s.s. Double Lifelines. African Mahogany Boom-Gallows on s.s. supports. Canvas: Khaki colored Dodger, Bimini, side curtains and Full cockpit cover creates sheltered outside comfort in bad weather when at dock or at anchor. Matching mainsail cover. Ground tackle and equipt: Manually operated Muir Windlass w/Gipsy and Drum; 150' - 1/4 galvanized chain; S.S. CQR type Anchor; Double bronze rollers on s.s. bow-sprit with teak platform. Compass: PLASTIMO Contest 100 Compass w/plastic cover incl. red light for card illumination. Electronics: There are no electronics on this boat eg: depth sounder, wind dir. Knot meter, radio, ship to shore etc. None at all.
Evaluation: Documented at "$140,000 Replacement Cost" by Capt. Tony Vasilopolis, Marine Appraiser for Dolphin Insurance, Vancouver, B.C. . . . performed immediately prior to launch as required by insurer. Note: All equipment used and/or installed on this boat is of the top most quality, built by highly regarded manufacturers who produce products that have in most instances become standards of the industry. The same applies to local contractors who have played any part in the building of this boat. I have all paperwork and owner's manuals for all products installed, as well as shop manual for the BMW engine and some tools. Reason for selling: I've now reached the grand age of 84 years and unable to sail the boat anymore with my dear wife, due to arthritis in my lower spine and attributed mobility problems eg: can no longer stand on a rolling deck. . As well, my family have all requested I take up a different hobby for their peace of mind. I hope to find a buyer who will appreciate the traditional design of this vessel and lots of teak trim. My ask price is Justifiable as vessel has been used for less than 30 hours in total since first launched in August 2015, making it effectively almost a new boat and equipment. A fair comparison for valuation would be a Dana 24 of same keel year, where you'll find the asking price is at least double, with many years of wear and tear needing repairs or costly replacement.
