The J/46 is a "maxi-Ditch" yacht, the tallest yacht that can fit under the bridges of the Intra-Coastal Waterway. Yet she is non-intimidating. A high length-to-beam ratio on the waterline of this seakindly yacht significantly improves tracking offshore in large waves and makes sailplan balance less critical. J/46 sails with either main or jib only, always responding predictably to a light touch on the helm. Sail power with good stability allows cruising with working jib rather than large genoa. That’s less work for the crew and improved visibility for the person on the helm.
Two people can easily manage her upwind and down to achieve the same 8 knot passage-making speeds under sail that is possible when motoring with 76hp diesel auxiliary. Headroom in the salon and galley is 6’4”. The cabin sole is teak and holly and there is abundant storage throughout the boat.
The master stateroom is forward featuring a 7' V-berth with custom foam cushions, custom fitted bed linens and custom fitted bed coverlet. . Aft of the berth to starboard are storage drawers, cabinet with counter and hanging locker. Forward has two large drawers at center of V, and one storage door, below to access speedo. To port is the ensuite head with separate shower stall, vanity, head and linen storage cabinet, as well as a washer/dryer combo.
The salon features an L-shaped settee to port and centerline drop leaf table with built-in wine cabinet. The sea berth is located above the port settee. A straight settee to starboard has bookshelves and storage above.
Aft and starboard of the salon is the navigation station with an upholstered bench seat. It features a large, lift-top chart table with sliding organizing tray below that will accommodate full-sized charts and navigation tools. Two additional drawers are accessible from the side of the chart table and there is a deep file drawer beneath the bench seat. Navigation equipment is mounted just outboard of the navigation station. The electrical panel is on the bulkhead aft of the bench seat.
Across from the navigation station to port is the U-shaped galley featuring fiddled Corian counter tops, SeaFrost freezer, dual compartment SeaFrost refrigerator cabinet, three-burner Force 10 propane stove with oven, double stainless steel sinks and ample storage.
The aft cabin is accessed via the starboard companionway and features a 7’ double berth with custom foam cushion, custom fitted bed linens and 6’ 2” headroom. Forward of the berth is a bureau and footlocker. A large hanging locker is forward of the bureau. There is an opening hatch above and three opening portlights.
The aft head features a combination head/shower and vanity. A wet locker runs fore and aft and is fitted with hooks for hanging foul weather gear. A door in the aft bulkhead provides access to the large cockpit lazarette.
Engine access is via the companionway steps which open to expose the front of the engine. There is additional engine access via the removable panels in the aft stateroom, aft head and port lazarette. . The engine room is lined with foiled foam sound shield insulation. This, along with the Aquadrive system, makes for an exceptionally quiet boat while motoring.
The port lazarette provides ample storage for gear and sails. This space is accessed through the aft head or from the hatch in the port cockpit settee. Fuel tanks are below and behind the aft berth. There are also two very large storage areas at the stern under the helm seat and one in the bow just aft of the anchor locker.
