TIGRESS II - A True Falmouth Cutter
What would it be like to own a Rembrandt painting?
Would you be regarded as an art connoisseur, an expert, a passionate lover of famous and unique artwork? Would you be holding a “one of a kind” masterpiece, one that will hold on tight to its monetary value?
Those are the feelings Gary & Christine have as owners and curators of Tigress II.
Tigress II is a Lyle Hess design, Randy Hanford custom build 30’, Falmouth Cutter that has been the recipient of multiple San Diego Yacht Club Awards. Her design and construction are very similar to what many know as the Bristol Channel Cutter, also designed by Lyle Hess. Under a different name, Tigress II was launched in 1997 and the well-known sailing couple, Lin and Larry Pardey’s vessel Teleisin was the model and inspiration for this custom build.
Every aspect of the design and the craftsmanship is an example of wooden boat building excellence. While speed, rough water capability and ease of handling were paramount considerations for the design, elegance and stunning woodworking craftsmanship rich with character, beauty and ageless perfection fills the interior with warmth and a real sense of home.
The main saloon design is well thought out and spacious. Looking down from the companionway to starboard, you see the aft head and to port, the Maplewood bathtub. The center piece is a stunning adjustable, foldout, custom teak with maple inlay saloon table. On both port and starboard sides, there are sizable pilot berths topping ample storage space. A very accessible and modern galley and navigation station area with 6’4” headroom completes the main saloon. The forward berth is roomy and comfortable. Tigress II is spacious and comfortable lending it’s warm atmosphere to owners and guests alike.
Here is what Gary & Christine have to say;
“We chose Tigress II for her sailing ability: we love to sail.
She carries 800 sq ft of canvas so she can sail in light winds and she has the ability to go windward in strong winds to get away from a lee shore if needed (which we have had to do several times in Mexico.)
We love her ability to hove to (which we had to do twice in a storm 80 miles off Oregon coast in 45+ knots of wind).
We really liked the idea of being able to stow a hard dingy on the cabin top.
Her two foot wide decks makes it safe to go forward in any sea conditions.
The bonus with Tigress II is the quality of the craftmanship details throughout the vessel. She truly is a custom, one of a kind Lyle Hess design.”
