REE has been exceptionally well maintained to Lloyds A1 Class. She is US Duty paid and underwent an extensive refit summer 2019 at the Newport Shipyard including new paint. New Engine room photos by Billy Black October 2019.
SY Ree is from the drawing board of the prestigious British naval architect office of Laurent Giles and launched in 1996 from the Italian shipyard of Valdettaro. She was conceived to be the ultimate sailing charter yacht of her time, compact enough to go anywhere yet spacious enough to accommodate 10 guests in five cabins and 6 permanent staff. Not only did she need to be roomy, she had also to sail well but promote a feeling of safety for the many charter guest who would be new to the motion of a sailing yacht. There is perhaps no better testament to the success of the design and the quality of build than to note how many (12) were built in a sector were one-off yachts are the norm, and the number still competing effectively with much newer designs in the charter market more than 20 years on. SY Ree has made the long ocean crossing between her two seasonal chartering regions, the Mediterranean and Caribbean seas, twice a year almost since she was launched, but still remains in Lloyds A1 class.
REE walk-through: Boarding the yacht via the stern on a hydraulic passarelle, that is withdraws behind a trap door when not in use, there are twin teak clad stairs to the main deck. In the center is a custom boarding ladder for easy access into the water and to provide a wide area to bring the tender across the stern for boarding and unloading. Here also is a watertight door into the lazarette with good access to the steering pumps, rudder quadrant and bearings, passarelle box, shore power box and were a large part of the yacht’s watersports inventory is stored close to were it will be deployed. A custom stainless-steel chip/chafe shoe is fitted around the stern/hull transition.
On gaining the main deck, and after passing under the arch were many of the nav and comms aerials are placed for easy access, the dominant feature is the partially enclosed Pilot House which can be made weathertight very quickly with roll down clear plastic screens.
Under a removable awning rigged between the arch and the top the aft end of the pilot house is the ‘chill out zone’ consisting of two 3m (10’) x 1m (3’) x 0.3 m (1’) mattresses port and starboard covered with throw cushions. A hammock and swinging chair can also be rigged in this area when required.
Inside the Pilot House is the focus of most of the activity in the warm climates the yacht was build for. There is a bar and service area in the forward part, complete with large fridge, the main dining table is to starboard, while a longing area is found opposite to port.
Forward of the pilot house is a raised area with more large mattresses which is the ideal spot for sunbathing or seeking a cooling breeze.
Further forward in front of the mainmast is a large open area that is ideal for those wishing to perform yoga or make use of the exercise equipment. It’s primary function however is as a dedicated tender bay. The tender is raised and lowered from the water via a dedicated pole permanently rigged on the mainmast, thus just a few minutes work by a well drilled crew with have the tender recovered or deployed safely. Also, up here are stored the two full size sit inside touring kayaks and further forward the windlass with chain locker and generous rope & fender storage below deck in the forepeak. Outboard of the tender bay are six very large deck lockers with storage for paint, tools, solvents and deck cleaning equipment.
At the forward end of the pilot house either side of the main companionway are the steering position and electronic nav console to port and to starboard a full-size admiralty chart table and chart storage area which opens to form a drinks preparations area with sink.
On going below via the recently restored Honduras mahogany stairs the main saloon opens up with an office area immediately to port and a large round coffee table encircled by a seating for 8 persons and lit but water level portholes.Over to starboard is more bench seating and another table below a 55’ flat screen TV.
Going forward through a door amidships gives access to the crew area which, for the length of the yacht, is very generously proportioned and well appointed. A large fully equipped galley is found to starboard and opposite is a crew dining area, floor to ceiling double refrigerator and laundry area. Storage lockers are found throughout plus below the floor there is space for bulk purchase items. A corridor leading forward has from port back around to starboard a dedicated en-suite Captain cabin, a twin cabin, a large toilet and shower room, a single cabin, another toilet and shower room a storage cupboard, another twin cabin and finally another storage cupboard.
Returning to the saloon we step aft down to the guest corridor. To port and starboard there are two rows of identical en-suite cabins that can convert between double and twin bed configurations. The lack of difference in cabins simplifies cabin choices for charter guests. At the end of the corridor is the Master suite, open plan and full width.
In August 2019 REE completed a 5-month refit at the Newport Shipyard including full paint job.
