The Skye 51 Ketch was designed by Kaufman & Ladd of Annaopolis, who were commissioned by the John G. Alden Company. Eighteen original Skye 51's were built under direct supervision of Alden and are highly sought after by world cruisers. The design was for a "performance cruising yacht" easily handled by a couple and intended for world voyaging.
Quest is hull #4 and was built in 1980. Her current owner of 8-years and her previous owner of 20 years have kept her in very original "bristol" interior condition. Quest is designed to cruise the worlds oceans in comfort and safety. She has never left the Puget Sound cruisng areas yet she is ready to go the distance.

As you descend the companionway ladder you will immediately notice the warm varnished teak interior. The varnish finish is original and in fabulous condition. To starboard is the navigation and electronics area. Immediately next to the companionway ladder is a proper wet locker for storing your foulies. To port of the ladder is the large "U-shaped" galley. Forward is the main salon with a large table on starboard with "U-shaped" settee. The table features bottle storage in center and removable fiddles to keep your placesetting in position. Opposite the table on port is a settee, with a cozy pilot berth above and outboard.
The cabinet separating the galley from the settee offers a convenient place for TV & stereo system and has additional bottle storage.
Forward of the main bulkhead is a forward cabin. A double pullman berth is on starboard with a single bunk (adjustable) above. Opposite on port is a sitting area, large hanging locker and generous storage.
As you go forward from the forward cabin is a large head, featuring a separate full size stall shower. The shower has a fiddled shelf and storage comparments
In the "vee" is a large sail locker with a door from the forward head and a sliding 3'x 3' deck hatch. This area is capable of holding all your offshore cruising gear and provides good access to the chain locker and windlass.
Aft of the companionway is the aft-cabin featuring a large pullman double berth and private head. This cabin has a large hanging locker, drawers and storage. Aft of this cabin is the engine room with a walk-in equipment space, engine and ample room for high-capacity system installation.
Throughout the boat the teak joinery is world class with beautiful teak bulkheads, details of cold-molded laminations and solid teak trim. Curved door frames are made of col-molded teak and look fantatstic. Quest was crafted with pride. A beautiful Leroy Niemen signed print of 12 meter yachts racing is framed and mounted on the bulkhead. A brass trawler style oil lantern hangs over the table.

Aft Head Compartment
The galley is to port of the companionway ladder and features fore and aft counters topped in white Corian, and wrapped with curved cold-molded laminated fiddles. The aft counter has two top loading doors which access a refrigerator and freezer. The refer may also be accessed by a front door so you can get to the bottom. In late 2010 the Grunert refrigeration compressor was replaced with 2 DC compressors. The refrigeration system is water cooled for offshore efficiency. A pair of thermometer dials monitor the temperature.
A Richmond-Shipmate LPG 2-burner stove & oven is mounted between the counter and is properly gimbaled for use at sea. An overhead ventilation fan vents overboard thru a stainless dorade.
The forward counter has a very deep stainless sink with Hot & Cold pressure water. There is abundant storage space througout the galley for offshore stores. An overhead deck prism floods the galley with natural light.
The sailing electronics were updated with a new Raymarine system in 2009. The system will display speed, depth, wind speed & direction, as well as computed functions such as VMG, true wind, and race timer. There are two Raymarine displays at the binnacle and a Raymarine E120 chart plotter w/ GPS is located at the binnacle. GPS serial output is provided for a laptop. A KVH Sailcomp is located at the binnacle. A Raymarine Radar unit is at the nav-station, but is also wired for use at the binnacle. Apelco 5200 VHF is integrated to the E120 plotter at the binnacle. An Autohelm 5000 under deck autopilot with linear drive is direct acting on the quadrant, with contols at both the nav and cockpit, or may be used with a remote (25' cord allows use under the dodger!). An Icom handheld VHF with bulkheaded mounted storage/charger is included. A wireless remote for the Uniden VHF with charging cradle is at the inside wall of the main hatch
Quest is equipped with quality gear for extended cruising. Her systems reflect this design criteria and are of the highest quality. There is a dedicated engine/equipment room to allow proper installations and easy maintenance.
The Perkins 4-236 Diesel engine is fresh water cooled. This 85HP engine is a large displacement, low rpm design for great durability. The Max-Prop 3-blade propeller minimizes drag while sailing and offers excellent reverse thrust. The engine is equipped with a 95 amp high capacity alternator for battery charging. Fuel is kept clean with a Racor fuel/water seperator.
Quest has a house bank of Six (6) deep cycle 6-volt "golf cart batteries, and a a seperate engine starting battery. A NewMar #ABC 12-50 battery charger is mounted in the full size engine room. A Bass full size 12-volt DC and 110-volt AC panel at the nav-center controls the power with individual circuit breakers/switches.
A Webasto forced air diesel furnace is mounted to port of the engine and is ducted throughout the boat. The heat system provides forced ventillation and is great on those winter cruises, night watches or when in the northern latitudes. All thru-hulls have been replaced with Forespar synthetic "Marethane" modular style which allows easy rebuild. The Marethane construction is fiber reinforced plastic and is corrosion and electrolosis resistant.
John Alden speciifed only the best gear, including the Hood Systems main and mizzen spars. Sails include Hood Main with full battens and lazy jacks, Hood Mizzen with full battens, Hood Staysail, Hood Mizzen Staysail, Hood Yankee, Hood Spinnaker with North snuffer sock, North Norlam 160% Genoa with only 6-seasons and an older North Norlam 155% Genoa which could be easily cut to a 125-130%.
This Ketch sailplan with large genoa on Schaeffer 3000 system roller furling, a a releasable inner forestay, powerful main and mizzen was designed for safe short handed sailing. The sailplan is spread over many sails allowing for easy adjustment of any one, with large winches and deck hardware providing the muscle. Quest carries the same PHRF handicap as a Hobie 33, she is capable of great performance yet her sailplan allows you to change gears as neccessary to weather storms or work through the lulls.
Quest has a beautiful low profile house that is accentuated by the long teak deck strips. She has a powerful, sleek and memorable look that is timeless. The deck hardware is of the highest quality and sized for easy handling of the sails. There are many opening hatches and dorades for quality ventilation.
Kaufmann & Ladd designed a performance voyaging yacht that is timeless and beautiful. Her "hull has a moderate draft, a high lift keel and rudder, long waterline with a fine entry and powerful stern - The necessary elements of a fast cruising hull".
The hull is made of solid FRP structure reinforced by a series of PVC foam core stringers and frames, laminated in during hull lay-up. All fasteners are silicone bronze or stainless steel. Hull to deck joint is through bolted with 3/8" stainless bolts on 4.5" centers, sealed w/ 3M-5200 Marine Adhesive, then the Bullwork Girder (tm) is fiberglassed in position triangulating the joint.
The deck & house are a fiberglass sandwich with 3/4" Airex PVC foam core to allow a stiff and strong structure that will resist moisture penetration. Hardware is fastened in localized hardwood reinforced areas and through bolted. Solid teak planking is overlaid on a butyl rubber bedding.
Kaufman & Ladd designed a unique hull & deck seam reinforcement they trademarked as the "Bullwork Girder". This FRP lamination triangulates the hull and deck with a lamination that runs the full length of the boat on both the port & starbord sides. This channel provides exceptional strength, an easy access to the joint bolts, a ready conduit for future wiring and completes a ventilation system throughout the yacht. In the bow area is a integrated large "dorade box" formed by the tip of the bow and vented by "shark fin holes", drainage scuppers drain the dorade. This dorade is vented to the forward "vee" cabin, and ties directly into the "bullwork Girder" allowing fresh air to move through the boat. The conduits are vented to all outboard storage lockers, heads, cabins and the engine compartment. Airflow can be controlled thru a plexiglass damper. This system is ingenious!
