Design Concept / History
The Gambling 34 was designed by Norway's premier naval architect, Jan Herman Linge, in the early 1970s. The design concept was to race in the 3/4 ton class, balancing speed and pointing factors to handle mulitple wind and wave conditions. She features a high ballast / displacement ratio providing good all-round performance.
The hull and rig are designed for ocean racing and the general layout is more for family cruising comfort. She features an unusual interior accommodation to maximize available space. This includes a two quarter berths aft, V berth forward, and space on setties for sleeping.
Approximately 50 of these vessels were manufactured in Norway. Some completed by the factory and others with interior finish-out by owners. This hull was completed by the factory and delivered to the US in hopes of selling into the North American market. Unfortunately, the economy dived about that time.
As such, this classic vessel is a solid, unique ocean crossing capable performance cruiser. A sister-ship is currently completing her cross-Atlantic voyage from Norway to the Caribbean and back, without incident. Most sister-ships are in Norway, with an active online owner's group.
As testament to any great boat, this vessel has been owned and cared for by the same couple for nearly 35 years.
