Her Construction and What It Means
as written by her current owner...
Being designed for wood, but built in glass in 1969 she is in a very sweet spot of boat construction. Being designed in the era of wood, she is beautiful. Being in the early years of fiberglass, they didn’t yet know how strong fiberglass was, they built her hull to the scantlings of wood. This means that the fiberglass is as thick as she would have been built if she’d been wood. When we moved the seacocks we got core samples and the thickness of the hull was ¾ of an inch below the waterline. This thickness is, of course, stronger and heavier. The fiberglass is all hand laid, as the chop gun was not in wide spread use at that time, and labor was cheap in Taiwan.
I truly believe, although I’ve never tried it, that she is bulletproof. I think you could fire a small caliber round into her and it wouldn’t penetrate.
The hull, top sides and bottom have all been painted in the last 5 years. The bright work was varnished two years ago, but needs some attention now. She has enough bright work to make her truly beautiful, but not so much as to make her an excessive burden to keep up.
The topsides were originally all teak. Fastened with thousands of screws, they are what gave this class of boat their original nickname “leaky teaky”. No doubt, they leaked a lot, but her side decks and foredecks have all been replaced by fiberglass. And they now have two part linear polyurethane painted decks with non-skid (coarse sand) embedded for maximum safety. The aft decks are teak, and quite beautiful, they are epoxied in place without screws, so they do not leak. They are natural / unfinished
The cabin and interior are wood construction. Being wood on the interior she is truly beautiful. The saloon, and main cabin are original wood, all very beautiful teak. The paint and varnish have all been redone in the last three years.
