The Morris 42 is a lengthened adaptation of the Morris 40. Both are superbly engineered offshore oriented designs with impeccable sailing characteristics and sufficiently large interiors and stowage capacity to make excellent liveaboard yachts. Besides a longer counter, the Morris 42 features the choice of a shoal or deep keel. The deeper keel would make an ideal choice for long distance cruising or racing, and its compliance with the new EC Directive at Category 0 insures that it offers remarkably safe offshore stability. The shoal keel permits access to many of the cruising grounds which the East Coast yachtsman prefers - Cape Cod, the Chesapeake, and the Bahamas - and is of the highly refined Paine-Morris elliptical bulb design which combines unusually high lift with excellent stability. In comparison with the Morris 40, the 42 offers larger lazarette lockers and the sleeker appearance that goes with additional overall length. A partially balanced skeg supported rudder is standard. With the virtual collapse of grand prix offshore racing, more and more races are being conducted under sensible handicapping formulas that do not unduly penalize true cruising yachts which are sailed with small crews and without removing all of the loose items aboard. In this sort of racing, the true bloodiness of a very fair hull shape, plenty of stability without resorting to crew on the rail, a very high lift keel for its draft, and superb helm balance assume more importance than rule beating hull bumps or 20 gallon water tanks. Knowledgeable yachtsmen have begun to notice that Paine designs are showing increasingly in the winner's circle in this sort of racing. Indeed, an eight year old Morris 36 just won her class in the Newport-Bermuda race - an irrefutable testimonial to the virtues of sophisticated yet conservative hull design. A versatile and powerful double spreader rig may be used without modification for either racing or cruising. Since the rigging is discontinuous, the owner may choose between cable or rod rigging for the sidestays. The standard approach to the sailplan is a full length battened mainsail with a sloop - cutter foretriangle. The mainsail is easily reefed using single line reefing which is brought back to the cockpit. The foretriangle is large enough to require only modest overlap genoa on the headstay, which will serve to carry the yacht into the 25 knot wind range by rolling in a small amount of reef. Thereafter the yacht may set a smaller staysail on its deployable inner forestay, enabling her to carry on into much heavier weather with the outer headsail fully furled. As is true on all Morris Yachts, the interior is custom designed for each owner. Two cabin interiors are available, as are single and double head interiors. In this length there is even sufficient size to fit a centerline double berth in the forward cabin if this is your preference. A choice of hardwoods is available for the interior finish, with recent yachts equally divided between teak, cherry, and mahogany. The standard of finish is very high, giving the owner a warm sense of comfort as well as reassurance of high perceived and actual resale value.
